So you caught a big fish?
Let’s see it!
This contest kicks off the New Year, and it’s a fun way to bring hardwater enthusiasts together!
You can fish the derby on any legal Minnesota body of water during the full contest period. Enter your eligble catch into the Walleye, Northern Pike, Crappie or Sunfish category. Then follow the leaderboard.
You will need a couple of things on hand when you land your catch, so be prepared!
1) You will need to include the image of our official contest logo in your measuring picture. Either print off the JPEG version in paper form to have on hand or save the jpg image and you can place your phone next to your measuring shot to show the required logo.
2) A legible measuring device, preferably a bump board. Be sure to check out our “how to measure” tips, so your big catch is measured properly and eligible for prizes – including weekly random draw winners and a Grand Prize winner in each of the four categories.

Measuring & Submitting Your Fish
Fish must be caught from Jan. 4, 2021-Mar. 5, 2021 on any public waters that you can legally fish on with a Minnesota State Fishing License.
Entries must include a legible photo of the fish on a bump board with the mouth closed and tail pinched. We have to be able to see the beginning of the measuring device and the numbers around the tail of the fish in the same photo.
We must also be able to see the official contest logo printed out on paper or you can display it on the screen of a phone also in the image.
Fish are measured rounding down to the nearest 1/8 inch. Deductions to measurements will be made if the mouth is open and not pushed against the beginning of the bump board at the tournament director’s discretion.
All entries must include two photos, one of the fish being accurately measured and one of the person holding the fish in a safe manner.
Leaderboards will be updated weekly on the Outdoor News Fishing Report website here. All entries are unofficial until verified by tournament judges. At the end of the tournament, the top entries from the leaderboard will have their submitted fish photo verified by a judge.
The judges shall have the right to verify that fish submissions are accurate and that they were legally caught. The decision of the judge is final.
Measuring “Bump Boards” with a lip at the beginning of the measuring device are preferred, but others may be used as long as they include inch measurements broken down to a minimum of 1/8 inch. Please use a standard tape measure to verify accuracy of your fish measuring devices.
Prize winners may be required to verify the accuracy of measuring device used for measuring fish during the tournament.
Winners will be notified using the information provided on the entry form.
Winners have five working days from our emailed notification to confirm award or another winner will be selected.
Prizes will be shipped or delivered to winners no later than 30 business days after the end of the contest using the information submitted with the entry form.
Keeping or releasing fish
It is up to the angler’s discretion whether to keep or release the fish so long as lake and state regulations are followed. Outdoor News promotes selective harvest and would like to see larger fish released to live and fight another day.
Methods of taking fish
